Soft Brewing Methods

Plunger

  1. Grind

It is recommended to grind fresh coffee beans just before adding water.

Use scales if possible and aim for a ratio of 18grams (2.5 generous table spoons) of ground coffee to 300mls of hot water. Double dose for larger plungers.

  1. Water

Use fresh water and bring to the boil, allow to cool for 30 seconds so the temperature drops to between 92C and 96C.

  1. Bloom

Slowly pour hot water onto the coffee grounds. Just enough to ensure the grounds are wet. This lets the coffee bloom, opening up and releasing its distinct flavours. Let it sit until it has stopped bubbling (about 2-3mins) then add the remaining hot water then stir briefly.

  1. Plunge

Place the plunger on top of the pot and let it sit for a further 3-4 mins to allow the flavours to infuse, then plunge.

The brew is ready to go and should provide an interesting flavour. Whilst the process remains the same the ratios of coffee to water can be adjusted to suit your personal taste.
